This building was built for the Great Exhibition held in Paris in 1900. The Grand Palais, built by Deglane and Louvet, has a façade with Ionic columns which is 240 metres long and 20 metres high. At present, important art shows and painting exhibitions are staged here, whereas previously the huge space was used for trade fairs, car showrooms and similar demonstrations. One part is permanently dedicated to the Palace of Discovery (Palais de la Découverte), showing the latest triumphs of science and the march of progress.
